King Records was a pioneer in the music industry, historically known as the sixth largest record company in the nation. Started by Syd Nathan during the World War II era, King Records was responsible for recording, pressing, art creation, manufacturing, packaging and shipping records all from one location – 1540 Brewster Avenue in Cincinnati, OH.

King Records began first in country music and then became the first fully integrated record company in the United States during the “race records” time period - before Black musicians became accepted in the mainstream as rock and R&B artists.

Over 60 artists and associates have been inducted into Music Hall of Fames including notable legends, James Brown, Otis Williams and Bootsy Collins, who began his career here at 15 years old. Country duo, The Delmore Brothers recorded what many regard as the ‘first rock and roll record” here followed by hits from Little Willie John and Hank Ballard and The Midnighters whose hit, “The Twist” was later covered by Chubby Checker.

The King Records’ Legacy continues with 1540 Brewster Avenue designated by the City of Cincinnati, OH as a Historic Landmark in 2015 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022. Restoration of a rich and vibrant history of defining music in every genre is currently in progress. “All musical roads lead back to King Records.” – Kent Butts, Executive Director of The King Records Legacy Foundation launched in 2021.
